Chiropractic – What to Expect

  • If you are under 18 you need to be accompanied by a guardian/ chaperone.
  • You are always welcome to bring along your friend (or chaperone).
  • You will be asked to fill out a simple form on arrival prior to your consultation, detailing your current problem and associated pain.
  • Your initial consultation with your Chiropractor will then involve a detailed case history of the information you have provided to try and identify the source and origin of your problem.
  • Assessment: A physical examination will then be performed involving some or all of the following:

Postural assessment

Palpation of the spine and the surrounding muscles

Range of motion assessment

Neurological assessment

Orthopaedic tests

X-ray’s may also be taken if required (referral)

You probably won’t be asked to undress (only 5% patients would be asked to change to provided dressing gowns).

  • Your Chiropractor will then develop a working diagnosis for your problem(s) and will discuss the treatment and techniques he feels are most suitable and the most appropriate course of action to achieve the best results.
  • On the Table: Throughout the treatment you will be fully dressed.
  • At the end of your session: you will usually be shown stretches or exercises to help you with your symptoms. We will usually review the movements or posture habits to advice an immediate lifestyle changes.
  • After your chiropractic appointment – you can usually expect some soreness, however some patients have no soreness post treatment. It is always advised to apply cold ice packs to the treated areas to reduce the inflammations.

By the time many patients attend the clinic they have normally had their problems for some time. It is important to remain consistent with your treatment because it is working to retrain and strengthen the muscles and ligaments that support the spine – put simply, each visit builds on the one before and consistency of treatment always leads to the best result.

If you have any questions or concerns your Chiropractor will discuss these with you to help build your understanding and knowledge to put your mind at ease.
